The moment we realised the UK couldn’t help us
We took some personal reflection to decide to start our surrogacy journey abroad. I still remember the day my husband and I sat across the table from an adoption counsellor who gently told us that the UK’s surrogacy and adoption frameworks weren’t built for families like ours. We had spent years talking about becoming parents, imagining who that little person might be — but every local path felt closed.
Surrogacy abroad became our light in the distance — though, at first, it was a terrifying one. How do you begin to navigate laws, agencies, clinics, and a surrogate mother in another country when you barely understand the terminology? We were just two hopeful parents, armed with determination and very little information.
That uncertainty — the loneliness of trying to do something so life-changing with no reliable map — stayed with me. It’s why, years later, I founded Global Surrogacy Advisors: to offer the clarity and support we never had.
The emotional journey of international surrogacy
The truth about surrogacy abroad is that it’s never just a legal or logistical process — it’s deeply emotional. There’s the elation of seeing that first positive test, and the gut-wrenching anxiety every time you wait for news across time zones. There’s joy, fear, exhaustion, and gratitude in equal measure.
What surprised me most was how many decisions we faced that no agency truly prepared us for: choosing an ethical program, ensuring the surrogate’s wellbeing, verifying contracts, dealing with embassy documentation, and navigating unexpected fees that seemed to appear out of thin air.
What I wish I’d known then
If I could go back, I’d tell my past self three things:
- Independent advice is essential. Agencies, while helpful, ultimately represent their own programs — not you. Having someone impartial to explain your rights and review your options is invaluable.
- Ethics must come first. Every family deserves a process built on respect for the surrogate and child, not just affordability or speed.
- Transparency saves thousands. Knowing what to expect financially — and legally — prevents heartache later.
These principles became the foundation of how I now guide clients through Global Surrogacy Advisors: ethical, independent, and fully transparent from day one.
How Global Surrogacy Advisors was born
After our own experience, I realised how many intended parents felt adrift in the same sea of confusion. I began speaking with other families and saw the same pattern — excitement clouded by uncertainty, faith tempered by fear of being misled.
Today, GSA helps clients around the world — particularly in the UK and Europe — make informed, ethical, and realistic decisions about surrogacy abroad. Whether it’s reviewing agencies in Colombia, comparing legal frameworks in Canada or the US, or creating a step-by-step roadmap for your journey, the goal is always the same: to make this experience feel safe, empowering, and human.
Why my story matters to yours
When people hear “independent surrogacy consultant,” they sometimes imagine a corporate advisor with a spreadsheet. But this work is deeply personal. Every time I speak to a new client, I think of us — two men at our kitchen table in 2019, just trying to find a way to bring our child into the world with love and integrity.
I built Global Surrogacy Advisors for those families — for anyone who wants to start their journey with confidence, clarity, and compassion.
